Blame your busy mama for not keeping up with this thing. But your sister is now asleep in my lap and I've had enough downtime to figure this thing blogging on the iPad, and am happy to be back at it.
You must be almost 5. I can't believe the last time I wrote here you were not even 2, you were just walking, obsessed with Ducks, and now you're almost 5. How that time has flown by, my sweet. Now here we are, on Mercer Island permenantly, (or at least for now,) at Yaya's house, preparing for your fifth birthday extravaganza. Rainbow cupcakes, fairy wings...I hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew! As Yaya says, the real fun is in the planning, anyway.
I figure, even if I could keep this up just once a year, you'd have quite a nice little collection of letters in a few years...And on the cusp of your fifth birthday, it seems appropriate to add the latest. Not that you couldn't read this right now and grasp it all, because you could, you amazing girl, but I'm not ready yet, so we'll wait a few years, I think.
I will not lie that your fourth year has not been a challenge, because it has. Your innate sweetness seems to have been replaced with bravado and swagger for the moment, and I'm trying to remember it is a product of your age. Not always easy.
Having a little sister has been a huge adjustment for you, and one we're all still getting used to. Suddenly Mommy is not always thinking about you. I know it's hard that Esmé can't really play, or even talk, and when she can do these things, and chase after you, it will be another story. But now she is a baby, and babies can be boring, I know, especially when you're 4, I think.
Your mind has been absolutely amazing to watch in this past year. Your voracious appetite for books delights me, and your reading ability is a marvel. If I don't tell you how smart I think you are, all the time, it's not because I don't think it. I think it every day. I just think it's just as important to work hard, a message I think I sometimes missed in my own upbringing. Always looking for an easy way out. I want you to appreciate the value of work. That's why I'm so proud of what you accomplished in your swimming lessons this summer, a skill not so effortless for you. I saw you become so much more confident in the water, and have no doubt that you'll be swimming like a mermaid next summer.
But back to your snapshot. You say hysterical things. I post hem all the time on Facebook, to the delight of my friends. Yaya and I or Daddy and I often exchange smirks with the funny things you say everyday. About taggie, Esmé, the world around you as you understand it. Hysterical.
I remember my favorite part of my baby book was reading my likes and dislikes for a particular year. So here goes, veering toward 5.
You love to read, that is true! You love picture books, chapter books, you were reading Mary Poppins just tonite. That's real literature!
Part of me is a little sad you are reading so independently, as reading out loud with my mom was one of my favorite memories from my growing up. Hopefully we'll have plenty of both. This year was about being everyone else but yourself! Rarely were you Cordelia this year, you were a butterfly, jewel the parrot, a kitty, a dancer, a mermaid, and of course, with the outfits to go along with! Although lately, this seems to be changing, and I am seeing more of plain old Cordelia. (as if Cordelia could ever be plain and old!)
You love Mac and Cheese, but only the good trader Joe's kind, burgers, ( preferably from Red Mill,) and you tried your first oysters. Anything from the sea continues to be a source of fascination for you. Octopus, Sharks or Mermaids, especially.(Not to eat, of course!)
You say you want to be an astronaut, and are also still fascinated by space. Although, being a fashion designer sounds like fun, too, and you are enjoying sewing projects with Yaya, and playing "project Runway".
You also love rough housing with Daddy, and Upside down girl, as long as he doesn't get too crazy.
You are finally starting to enjoy the outside and the playground so much more. We used to go, and you would just sit there, dumbfounded, slightly. Now you find friends to play with, and are off like a shot, at least some of the time! Slides are not the scary thing they once were, and I see you climbing and stretching your beautiful brown legs more and more.
You've developed quite a nice posse of friends, too. We both have. That had been a huge benefit in coming back to the Northwest. It all started with Griffin next door, and now I would add Caroline, Keiva, Sadie your cousin, plus the kids from learning lab. I love seeing you enjoy your friends. There was a time that I worried your life was too adult, surrounded by adults. Not any more.
Well, this is one tired Mama Bear, so I think I"ll wrap this up. Happy Fifth Birthday, my darling girl. I love you.
Your Mama
